Nyami who’s deeply rooted African traditions were instilled into her from birth, her dream of becoming an attorney was derailed after a horrible car accident killed her parents, forcing her to drop out of college to raise her sister. She meets and marries conniving David who will forsake any and everything to reach his career goal in the cutthroat world of politics on which anything less than perfection is not tolerated. ...not even their children.
Traci, Nyami’s best friend since grade school, uses a claim of child abuse as a steppingstone to a better life. Removed from her mother’s home and raised by her grandmother she strategically achieves the lifestyle that she fiercely fought to achieve, to find that she could not erase the stench of her past that is embedded in the core of her being, nor the devastation she inflicted on her mother. She meets Kevin the man that stirs her spirit and causes her to rethink her priorities in life. . .but unbeknownst to her, Kevin does not have his own priorities in perspective.
Natalie, the daughter of a wrongly imprisoned black activist, was raised to embrace her culture. She was taught to take pride in who she is and is firmly connected with her community. She was home schooled by her mother and aunt, but when she began college in another city, away from the watchful eye of her parents, she realized just how small her world is and began to develop her own opinions. She meets Nyami and is fascinated with the African traditions that she practices, and quickly befriends her to gain knowledge on a Country that is foreign to her as she struggles to comprehend an alternative vision of herself. She meets and falls deeply in love with Cameron whose mother struggles to fit into a society that does not accept her kind. . . regardless of the money she possesses. Their relationship will open and close doors that will change the course of her life.
Sharon, raised by her two beautiful older sisters, embraces the trappings of ghetto life. She idolizes her sisters whose only concerns in life are makeup, boys, and drugs. With no desire to better herself she is seduced into drug dealing until she is unexpectantly forced to go live with her father and his new bride who exposes her to a better way of life. Her sister Arlene is not happy with the change in her otherwise dowdy appearance and becomes hateful towards her and breaks the bond of trust that they once shared. Her sister, Karen, spirals into a drug-induced life of prostitution and Sharon suffers the heartbreak of not being able to save her. After a brutal gang rape, she becomes pregnant and after several unsuccessful attempts to end her pregnancy, she tricks her sister’s boyfriend into a marriage that catapults her into a lifestyle that she easily becomes accustomed to and is determined to maintain it by any means necessary. In her quest to better herself, she meets and befriends Traci and is impressed with the sisterhood that Nyami, Traci and Natalie share, she inserts herself into their lives and re-evaluates the actions of her past.

While ladies and luggage is a fictional story, it resonates with a hint of truth. I can see pieces of myself in each of the women depicted in this story, Nyami‘s desire to control; Traci’s discernment; Natalie’s sense of community; and Sharon’s insecurities.
There will always be hints of truth in any well-told story. The human element is slowly fading, but a hint of humanity is still in us all, and being reminded of that is always a welcomed nuance.
